Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analyses for drugs and alcohol in Adams, New York. Whether you require testing for controlled substances or alcohol, our specialized hair tests are available at centers nationwide, including Adams. Generally, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized analyses.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become increasingly favored in drug testing. Employers, courts, and treatment professionals often prefer hair over urine tests. These tests are especially common where zero-tolerance policies exist, in legal settings, and for probation management. One major advantage is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, which is conducted under strict observation. However, urine remains the preferred choice for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for recognizing alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 strands of hair (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (face, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory assessment of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples initially positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), explaining why hair drug screening is the toughest method to conduct.

Confirmation of any initially positive result is performed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is extremely hard to falsify a hair drug test, improving result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can unveil a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in Adams, NY emerges superior in reliability and detection accuracy. Hair tests capture a broader picture of substance usage history over time, making them especially useful for workplaces with strict drug policies and compliance needs. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
