Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in White Sands, New Mexico. If a hair sample is needed for drug or alcohol testing, this is our specialty. With locations in every city Nationwide, we offer convenient hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is used. Tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine testing. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies, legal procedures, and probation settings. This method's key advantage is a longer detection period—up to 90 days. It is observed and hard to tamper with. For recent usage detection (last 5 days), urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the enlarging hair. When collected near the scalp, it offers a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. The hair collection process is straightforward, moderately tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, ideal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent mass of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing procedure comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This process involves verifying the intactness and proper shipment of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data input not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in most samples, legal admissibility requires confirmation of a positive screen. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. During this stage, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive screening confirmations are completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If necessary, all presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to evade: Hair drug tests are notoriously difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: Provides a usage pattern over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to reveal recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug evaluations are pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
