Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Whether for a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialized hair testing services are available in facilities nationwide, ready to conduct the examination. Typically, around 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can be customized for drug, alcohol/ETG detection, and other unique testing needs.

Recently, drug testing techniques have increasingly involved hair follicle analyses. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial requirements, and probation scenarios. These tests boast a longer detection window of approximately 90 days, are conducted under direct observation, and are significantly more tamper-resistant. For detecting recent drug use, particularly within the past five days, urine tests remain the benchmark for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encases a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within its growing strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers nearly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collection is straightforward, it's reasonably hard to tamper with, and shipping is convenient.

An ideal sample of around 200 strands of hair measuring 1.5 inches, typically the width of a #2 pencil, near the scalp is needed to provide 100mg of hair for analysis. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the hair sample accurately. In cases where scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used instead. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a lab involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initiation of sample processing within the lab’s system. It includes checking that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry beyond what's provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening does a swift initial check for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for eliminating drugs in most samples, Screening requires confirmation for a positive result to be court-valid. Samples found presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair from the sample is extracted for further processing. In the Extraction stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex process to carry out.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive results initially detected during Screening. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It provides an overview of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't spot recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair tests.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
