In Westville, New Jersey, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. Whether it's for detecting drug or alcohol use, our expertise in hair testing is supported by nationwide locations, enabling hair tests in any city. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is sufficient. Tests cover a range of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, with various custom options available.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years as a reliable method of drug screening, surpassing traditional urine tests. They are favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals due to their zero-tolerance drug use policies. Offering a detection window of up to 90 days, hair tests are conducted under observation, minimizing the possibility of tampering, whereas urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands provide an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of roughly three months for substances, including alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, with low risk for tampering, and is easy for transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will amount to 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses hair from other areas (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory analysis for a drug test consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary incorporation of the sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring it’s sealed and dispatched accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid examination for drug presence. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug usage for most samples, any positive results require confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples labeled as positive in the Screening stage need further confirmation.

A sample deemed positive in Screening will have additional hair taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most intricate method.

Positive screening results are verified by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug screening can identify drug use extending up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter range.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It shows a history of drug use over time, instead of capturing only recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to determine recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair analysis is often pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the examination actually involves analysis of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Surpasses Urine Testing: In Westville, NJ, hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
