Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stratford, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing stands out as a specialist in hair testing. With centers available nationwide, we can perform tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or a variety of other options. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, though body hair may also be utilized.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has grown increasingly common in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often opt for this method over traditional urine testing. Designed for those with zero-tolerance drug policies, it boasts a 90-day detection window and is observed during collection, making it nearly impossible to subvert. For drug use within the past 5 days, however, urine tests still hold greater accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a formidable method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for substances and alcohol. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An approximately 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in a lab's handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into the lab’s system, such as confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody arrangement.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for abuses of drugs. Screening is efficient for eliminating drug usage in the majority of samples, but a positive result must be validated to be legally acknowledged. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, the drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), especially since hair drug investigation is the most complicated methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's quite challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a trend of drug use over a span of time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests," the actual test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
