In Princeton, New Jersey, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing extends across multiple testing centers nationwide. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or elsewhere is needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance assessments. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often request hair drug evaluations over urine-based tests. Hair follicle assessments are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, the judicial system, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive drug detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing a supervised collection process that is nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol use across a detection period of up to roughly three months. Hair extraction is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Aprox 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analysis, or when testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If no scalp hair is available, equivalent quantities of body hair can be collected. References to head hair exclusively imply scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If the Screening phase indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug analysis as the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicative of positivity are cleansed before confirmation, if required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrary to urine assessments with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably hard to overturn, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can depict a pattern of drug use over a duration, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and unique hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference to "hair follicle tests", the actual examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Princeton, NJ, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are numerous. Hair tests provide a superior detection period, encompassing up to 90 days of drug use history, far exceeding the limited detection window of urine tests. This allows for a more comprehensive analysis of an individual's substance habits.

Hair testing’s reputation is boosted by its inability to be easily defeated through adulteration or substitution, unlike urine tests. This ensures that the results reflect an accurate depiction of an individual’s drug use, supporting more informed decision-making by employers and other stakeholders.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Princeton, NJ offers an extensive detection window, up to 90 days, making it ideal for capturing long-term substance abuse patterns. With its broad insight into an individual's drug history, it provides employers with critical data that is not available through traditional testing methods.

This extended timeframe allows businesses and organizations to make well-rounded decisions regarding employee and applicant substance use. Hair testing closes gaps left by shorter detection methods, resulting in a more complete view of past drug behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests conducted in Princeton, NJ, significantly minimize the risk of sample tampering. Unlike other methods, the integrity of a hair sample is challenging to compromise, ensuring accurate and genuine test results.

This tamper-resistant characteristic makes hair follicle testing a preferred choice for those seeking foolproof drug screening methods. The results from these tests are dependable and difficult to dispute, enhancing their reliability and effectiveness in substance detection protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
