Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Holmdel, New Jersey. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist in hair analysis. Our testing centers are located in numerous cities Nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary for testing. Hair tests can evaluate substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair analyses.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are part of the approach for conducting drug screenings. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests serve entities with zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and probationary surveillance. A hair follicle test provides a longer detection window, often reaching 90 days, with a supervised collection that is nearly immune to tampering. However, a urine test remains the most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Viewed as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When procured near the scalp, hair can manifest a detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an ideal sample for assessments and confirmations. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial introduction of a sample into the laboratory system. This process includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for substance abuse. Although a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that presumptively test positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from the screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can uncover a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
