Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Hackettstown, New Jersey. For hair drug or alcohol testing, trust Accredited Drug Testing, specialists in hair analysis with testing centers in cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is typically needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing setups.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers regularly utilize hair follicle tests. A major advantage is its extensive drug detection period of up to 90 days, with samples taken under supervision, making cheating almost impossible. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair snippet comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair could be obtained. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory procedure of processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s system. This entails confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial, expedited assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be lawfully acceptable. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and accreditation adhering to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to deception: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insights: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use patterns, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incunable to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are commonly more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuation: Diverse factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
