Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Clinton, New Jersey. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers present in every city across the country to conduct these tests. In most scenarios, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine ones. These tests cater to employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. Hair follicle tests boast a detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are virtually impossible to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. This method captures a longitudinal record of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber itself. When collected near the scalp, it offers a retrospective detection period for alcohol and other substances spanning up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield around 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10-panel testing, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent weight of body hair can be used. When indicating head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other categories of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The procedural sequence in the lab processing of drug testing results includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The phase of Accessioning deals with the initialization of a sample within the lab’s framework. This step involves checking that the sample remains sealed and correctly transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a swift preliminary assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug presence in the bulk of samples, a positive finding requires corroboration to hold in legal proceedings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the existing sample is gathered and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), underlining the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any presumptive positive from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes cleansing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days versus the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper: Manipulating a hair drug test result is exceptionally challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: It can trace patterns of substance use over a timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify short-term use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be costlier compared to alternative drug detection methods.
  • Outcome variability: Variables such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Clinton, NJ
Hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests with its unparalleled detection accuracy and dependability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are harder to falsify, guaranteeing that results reflect true substance patterns over significant durations, making them the preferred choice in many scenarios.

While urine tests identify drug use in recent days, hair tests reveal patterns over months. By choosing a hair follicle test, employers and individuals ensure deeper insights and more reliable data on substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Clinton, NJ
Hair follicle testing offers an unparalleled detection window of up to 90 days, providing a broader examination of an individual's substance history. This extended detection period gives employers a detailed insight into prospective or current employees' substance use over time.

This longer detection capability makes hair tests superior, offering a comprehensive overview that urine tests simply cannot match. Such extensive monitoring is beneficial for making informed employment decisions in Clinton, NJ.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
