Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Lincoln, Nebraska. Those needing hair-based testing for drugs or alcohol can rely on our expertise. We have facilities across all U.S. cities capable of conducting a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

More recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for screening. It is often required by employers, the legal system, and Substance Abuse experts as a substitute for the usual urine test. Companies with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation programs favor this method. A key advantage is the extensive 90-day detection window, gathered under supervision, making it tough to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for recent drug detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow, hair offers a comprehensive record of substance use over time. When samples are taken from near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol activity over a span of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, alteration is relatively challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmatory analysis. For enhanced tests like EtG, or panels above ten, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for precise weighing of the specimen. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically denotes head hair, while body hair pertains to all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails incorporating the sample into a laboratory's framework. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial scan for drugs of interest. While it offers a cost-efficient solution to rule out drug presence in most samples, confirmation is necessary for legal viability in cases of positive results. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require subsequent validation.

Upon a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are drawn from the hair at much lower levels than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which explains the complexity of conducting hair drug analysis.

Verification of any presumptive positive results occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing process prior to confirmation as required. The entire process, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing with its shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug testing is notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical consumption patterns: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time instead of merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs only become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher expense: Generally, hair drug testing costs more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the underlying scalp follicle.

In Lincoln, NE, hair follicle testing is a superior alternative to the traditional urine test. Its advantages include a much longer detection period and a higher reliability, offering unbeatable accuracy in detecting substances.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
