In Manchester, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol tests. If you're in need of hair testing, our centers are available nationwide, offering specialized services in all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp, though body hair can also be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent recently for drug screening. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse specialists now often opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests are favored by employers with no-tolerance drug policies, the court system, and those on probation. The primary advantage is the extended detection window, often up to 90 days, and a collection process that's observed and tough to manipulate. However, for drug use detection in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referencing head hair, it relates solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in a laboratory’s drug test result processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a specimen within a lab’s system. This involves checking that the specimen was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid verification for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a much weaker concentration than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is enacted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, which enhances the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Historical usage patterns: It can depict a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug traces in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
