Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ferguson, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this domain, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or the body are needed for the test. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be adjusted for other specific requirements.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug-testing procedures. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. Employers with strict anti-drug strategies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation favor hair follicle assessments. These tests primarily offer an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, ensure sampling under observation, and are incredibly difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for identifying alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg of the sample is recommended. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug testing result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody documentation.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen result necessitates confirmation to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples presumptively positive are washed as required prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical usage pattern: Hair tests can show a drug use pattern over time, as opposed to just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: There is a 5-7 day period before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Ferguson, MO

In Ferguson, the advancement of drug testing methods highlights the superior benefits of hair follicle testing over urine tests. Hair tests excel in detection accuracy and reliability, offering a broader examination scope. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
