In Farmington, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers in cities across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair tests effectively analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for drug screenings. It's increasingly used by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts who prefer it over traditional urine tests. Adopted by employers with zero-tolerance policies or by judicial systems for probationers, its main advantage is a 90-day detection window, ensuring reliable results through observed collections, which are virtually impossible to tamper with. Urine tests, however, are still preferred for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-term record of substance use by sealing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers an estimated 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for lab evaluation of a drug test result includes four central steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective to preclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to hold up in court. Samples that test presumptive positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is obtained from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lesser concentrations than in other methods like urine or oral fluids, contributing to hair testing's complexity.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The whole lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect over shorter periods.
  • Cheating is difficult: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Includes historical data: They can reveal a timeline of drug use, not limited to recent incidents.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to show up in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variation: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Commonly alluded to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, excluding the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
