Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Creve Coeur, Missouri. For those needing hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialty includes hair examinations, with centers located nationwide ready to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists are favoring hair tests over traditional urine examinations. Companies with zero-tolerance for drugs, courts, and individuals on probation see the advantage. The main benefit of hair tests is their extended detection capability, up to 90 days, with supervised collection that’s nearly foolproof. However, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. Hair taken close to the head can reveal about a 3-month window of alcohol and drug presence. This method is easy to perform, harder to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For extended tests like EtG, additional samples, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome involves four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a specimen into a lab's system. It includes validating that the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is conducted to perform a preliminary check for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most specimens, any positive screening requires confirmation for legal purposes. All presumptive positives from the Screening phase require a follow-up confirmation.

A presumptive positive result in the Screening stage leads to more hair being extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug analysis notably challenging.

Verification of positive screening outcomes happens through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show positive screenings are cleaned before verification if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Verification is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that feature a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is challenging to falsify hair drug tests, which ensures more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug intake over a span of time, not just recent usage.

Considerations:

  • Inability to determine recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
