Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clinton, Missouri. Our expertise lies in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, with centers available nationwide for easy access. Typically, you need around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from your head or body, for accurate testing. We offer testing that covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence as a preferred method for detecting drug use. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers as it offers a longer detection period of up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with during the observed collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain optimal for confirming drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for identifying both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a chronicle for long-term alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the threads of the developing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can present up to an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, notably resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides about 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four principal steps constitute the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This comprises verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial straightforward assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably reduced concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes necessary washing before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to deception: It is considerably hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can chart a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the subscalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Surpasses Urine Tests in Clinton, MO: Hair follicle tests provide superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests, especially for long-term substance use. Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers a reliable detection window, ensuring accuracy that benefits employers, courts, and safety professionals in maintaining drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Clinton, MO: One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use up to 90 days. This extended window provides employers with a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance use history, facilitating informed decision-making in hiring or ongoing employment scenarios.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
