Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Clayton, Missouri. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is matched by our nationwide network of centers ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for performance. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other unique hair testing options.

In recent times, the utilization of hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. This method suits employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. Its primary advantage lies in its longer detection range of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and resistance to evasion. For drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain unsurpassed.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair preserves a long-term sequence of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can show a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, tough to falsify, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and verifying. For EtG extensions and examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, this refers only to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initially entering a sample into a lab's system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data needed that's absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most cases, any positive screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening will require an additional verification.

If a sample notes presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to perform.

Validating any presumptive positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity receive a wash before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeline: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests are difficult to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternate drug testing modes.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clayton, MO, hair follicle tests provide significant advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair testing not only identifies drug use more accurately but also proves more reliable in preventing user interference or cheating the test. This results in a more truthful reflection of an individual's substance use history.

One key benefit is the extended detection window that hair tests provide, allowing for identification of drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which typically only capture recent consumption. Thus, hair testing offers a broader view of an individual’s substance usage patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Clayton, MO, are essential for their ability to track substance use over an extended timeframe, up to 90 days. This long detection period gives employers a complete overview of an individual’s substance use history, allowing for more informed employment and personnel decisions.

Employers benefit particularly as hair tests provide insights into longer-term behavioral patterns compared to the short-range findings of other testing methods like urine tests. This can be pivotal for maintaining a safe and drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Using hair follicle tests in Clayton, MO, significantly curtails the risk of sample tampering often associated with other testing methods. By employing an observed collection process, they offer indisputable results, making them a superior choice for accuracy and reliability.

The nature of hair testing means it’s nearly impossible to alter the results, ensuring authentic outcomes that employers and other authorities can trust. This assurance supports confident decision-making in drug use assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
