Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug screening in Arnold, Missouri. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Hair testing enables analysis for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in recent years for substance detection. Increasingly, employers, legal courts, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests over urine tests. These tests are essential for workplaces with zero-tolerance policies, judiciary systems, and probation cases. A significant advantage is the extended detection period for substances, which can reach up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering difficult. However, for recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair follicle evaluations have emerged as a robust means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. With the ability to encapsulate biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair—this is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. Head hair signifies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial phase of processing a sample within a laboratory’s system. It involves verifying the secure sealing and correctly shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to assess drug usage across most samples, confirmation is needed for a positive screen to be acceptable in legal contexts. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening as one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It can outline a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
