Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Philadelphia, Mississippi. For those needing hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by testing facilities across all major cities Nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, these tests can evaluate for substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Recently, there has been a rising trend in utilizing hair follicle drug tests over conventional methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists demand this type of testing over urine analysis. Hair follicle examinations cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal authorities, and those on probation. The main advantage of this method is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly foolproof against manipulation. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug consumption within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as a powerful asset for identifying drug and alcohol use, hair testing captures a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, this technique can reveal alcohol and drug use with a detection window extending up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

Taking a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (about a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, and those exceeding ten-count—150mg of hair is advisable. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The pivotal stages in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the primary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This stage includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry possibly absent in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, swift examination for substances of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use from most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumptively positive in Screening call for a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are derived from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found using alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids). This makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards oversee the entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Drug use can be identified for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical patterns: It reveals not just recent use but a timeline of drug use over time.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
