Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Grace, Mississippi. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair testing, with centers available in all major cities nationwide. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body which can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing options.

Recently, the method for conducting drug tests has increasingly included hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests rather than traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers find hair follicle tests particularly useful due to their extended drug detection period, lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making them nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests still prove most effective for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust mechanism for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a lasting record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. By gathering hair near the scalp, it can offer roughly a 3-month scope of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requirements, or assays over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types like facial or axillary hair and others.

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test result at the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's initial entry into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and ensures all data entry is completed when not provided electronically through a chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs. It's an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, but a positive screen needs verification for legal validity. Those samples flagged as positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a potential positive during Screening, further hair is utilized from the initial batch for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods like urine or oral fluids, which underscores the complexity of hair drug analysis.

A positive screening confirmation uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The full lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have briefer detection spans.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on hair drug testing is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers usage history: Provides a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Cons:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs need around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs a higher cost than other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and growth differences influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
