Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in St. Paul, Minnesota. For those needing testing for drugs or alcohol, we focus on hair testing with facilities available across all U.S. cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body to proceed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

There has been an increasing reliance on hair follicle drug testing as the preferred method for many. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by workplaces with strict drug policies and for probation purposes. Their primary advantage is the extended detection duration, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an influential technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in its fibrous strands as they grow. When collected adjacent to the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches with about 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an ideal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional applications, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all different hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial stage of processing a sample into the lab’s system. This involves verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be admissible in legal contexts. Any samples exhibiting a presumptively positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection capabilities.
  • Challenges to manipulate: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In St. Paul, MN, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests with superior detection precision and reliability. Hair samples do not degrade over time, offering a robust solution for uncovering past substance use much longer than urine tests.

Compared to urine tests, hair testing in St. Paul offers an extended detection window, capturing a more complete picture of an individual's drug history. This allows for informed decision-making by employers and authorities.

Employers in St. Paul find hair testing more trustworthy due to its reduced susceptibility to tampering. Unlike urine, hair samples remain intact, providing untainted and accurate substance detection.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in St. Paul, MN, provides a unique advantage with an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days. Unlike other methods, it allows employers to assess a more comprehensive history of substance use.

For companies looking to gain a holistic view of prospective hires, this capability is invaluable. Hair tests reveal a three-month snapshot of drug use, going beyond the immediate insights offered by urine tests.

This prolonged detection period assures employers in St. Paul, MN, of getting an accurate sense of a potential or current employee's drug history, aiding in making more informed hiring and workplace safety decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the strongest attributes of hair follicle testing in St. Paul, MN, is its resistance to tampering, ensuring the sample's integrity and the reliability of results. This is a highly significant factor for employers enforcing drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
