Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Russell, Minnesota. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities available in cities across the country capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved the use of hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. A major advantage of hair follicle tests is their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, carried out under observed conditions, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Hair collected close to the scalp can present nearly a 3-month detection window for substances. Its collection process is straightforward, it's hard to tamper with, and it's easy to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches, composed of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both initial screening and confirmation. To perform EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample's weight with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, collecting an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. Specifically, head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in a laboratory consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning means entering the sample into a laboratory’s system following its receipt. This phase verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completes any additional data not inputted via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as an initial examination for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for initially eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation before being valid in court. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a Screening test indicates a presumptive positive, a further portion of the initial hair specimen is utilized for Extraction. During this phase, drug components are extracted from hair at much lower levels than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is a complex process to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Every presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Cheating detection: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Captures drug use history: Offers insights into a pattern of drug use over a longer period, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become visible in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal growth differences can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently named "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
