Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Brighton, Minnesota. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a top choice, with testing centers nationwide ready to perform such tests. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head, although body hair can also be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. This shift has been endorsed by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts who prioritize hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. These tests serve organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. One key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days. This method is conducted under direct supervision, minimizing the possibility of test tampering. Despite its efficacy, when testing for recent substance use within five days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (resembling a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. 'Head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a specimen into a lab's system, which includes ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry when not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified before being permissible in legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this point, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of conducting hair drug testing.

Validation of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, hence the results are more reliable.
  • Reveals usage over time: It offers an indication of drug use patterns over a period, rather than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
