Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Monticello, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing includes accessible centers across all cities nationwide that provide such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are used by companies with no-tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a longer drug use detection window, up to 90 days, with monitored collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain precise for recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers into the strands as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection period of around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A suitable sample is a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands near the scalp, equating to 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick test for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires a confirmatory test for legal acceptability. Any samples that appear positive during Screening demand further confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminary positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted at minute concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can display a drug use pattern over time, not just pinpoint recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug screening procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
