At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle drug testing services around Menahga, Minnesota. Whether you're in need of hair drug or alcohol assessments, our specialization in hair testing is supported by facilities in numerous cities nationwide. By utilizing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head—or other body hair in some scenarios—we can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized hair test selections.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug examinations has notably included hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts require hair drug evaluations over traditional urine tests. This method serves organizations with zero-tolerance drug regulations, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, achieved via supervised sampling, making deception nearly futile. Yet, for substance use checks within five days, the urine test remains highly precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to a 90-day period. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send for testing.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair, serves as the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair might be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Procedure Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is introduced into the lab system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial assessment to detect drug abuse. While cost-efficient, any positive results from Screening must be substantiated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a presumptive positive arises during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies.

Positive screening outcomes are confirmed through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug testing is notably difficult to tamper with, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing modalities.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug markers in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Prevails Over Urine Testing in Menahga, MN

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy and dependability. While urine tests track recent use, hair tests provide a longer detection period, capturing substance intake up to 90 days prior. This capability is invaluable for employers and institutions aiming for a comprehensive substance use evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Menahga, MN

One of the most important features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, offering insights into drug use over a 90-day period. For employers, this prolonged assessment enables an all-encompassing overview of an applicant or employee's past substance consumption, granting them informed decisions based on extensive evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
