Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lakeville, Minnesota. If you require hair drug or alcohol testing, we are experts in hair testing with facilities available in cities across the country, including the capability to conduct hair tests. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is needed. Hair testing can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing methods has risen recently. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, probation services, and courts favor this method. A hair drug test’s main advantage is its extended detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days. Although, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests are most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronicle of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Hair samples collected near the scalp can offer a detection range of up to around three months for substances such as drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward; it is relatively resistant to tampering and convenient for transport.

A sample 1.5 inches in length, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yields about 100mg—ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for measuring the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" addresses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This involves ensuring that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Despite being an economical option to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. This step involves retrieving drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any presumptively positive screening findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug testing can identify drug use over 90 days, which surpasses the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to manipulation, improving the precision of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can chart a timeline of drug use, demonstrating patterns over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Not conducive to detecting recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair typically requires approximately five to seven days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variation in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration in hair strands.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading as the test primarily examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing triumphs over urine testing in its scope and reliability in Lakeville, MN. While urine tests can detect recent use, hair tests offer a longer detection window and greater accuracy.

  • Extended Detection: Hair tests can identify substance use up to three months prior.
  • Difficult to Cheat: Hair samples are harder to adulterate compared to urine.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
