Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Chatfield, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this method and have facilities nationwide, including every city, to conduct hair tests. Ideally, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or even body hair is sufficient for the test. Hair samples can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent practice in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often opt for hair drug tests rather than the standard urine analysis. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation subjects prefer these tests. Their advantage lies in an extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, making deception exceedingly rare. Urine tests, however, remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use, within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair records a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can offer a retrospective window of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for initial tests and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested that the sample be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When addressing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary workflow of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s records. This step includes ensuring that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional entries absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal proceedings. Any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening require a further confirmation test.

Should a sample be potentially positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is utilized from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This step isolates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or saliva, which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that indicate a presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have shorter detection timelines.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It enables the mapping of drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
