Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chaska, Minnesota. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and provides testing facilities across all cities in the nation where a hair test can be conducted. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, or body hair can be used. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

In recent years, the method for conducting drug tests increasingly includes hair follicle drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. They offer benefits like extended detection times, usually up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, and are difficult to manipulate. However, to test for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair contains a lengthy record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection span of 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" refers singularly to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug test analysis encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data not provided by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination to identify drugs. Though a cost-efficient method to generally rule out drug presence, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the primary sample is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

The validation of any positive screening outcomes is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. Throughout, the entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption over up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a narrower detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating in a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It outlines a timeline of drug usage, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are often pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
