Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across the nation available. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair analyses can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other bespoke testing options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle analysis. Many companies, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists prefer hair over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courtroom mandates, and probationers commonly opt for hair follicle tests. The key advantage is its extended detection span of around 90 days, collected under observation, and is highly tamper-resistant. Yet, for drug use detected within 5 days, urine remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a historical archive of drug and alcohol consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to about 90 days for drug and alcohol presence. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A hair sample of 1.5-inch length comprising roughly 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analytes, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, thereby ensuring more accurate results.
  • Tracks historical use: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Brooklyn Park, MN, outperforms urine testing in several key ways. While traditional urine tests might catch recent substance use, hair tests offer broader and more reliable detection. Hair tests don't just stop at recent use; they stretch back to unveil a 90-day history, far surpassing urine test limitations.

Employers and legal entities favor hair tests for their ability to uncover long-term patterns of use. The assurance of accurate and ample detection puts hair testing in a league above, providing clarity and peace of mind when addressing drug use concerns compared to traditional urine methods.

Extended Detection Window

In Brooklyn Park, MN, hair follicle tests provide a long duration of detection, up to 90 days, allowing employers a thorough view of an individual's substance history. This extended window helps to reinforce confidence in the screening process, presenting a more comprehensive picture than shorter-term tests.

The extended detection period of hair tests means that they can reveal patterns of substance use that may otherwise go undetected. Employers gain valuable insights into an applicant or employee's long-standing habits, helping to make informed decisions that align with company policies and expectations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing, utilized in Brooklyn Park, MN, significantly mitigates the possibility of sample tampering, delivering trustworthy and definitive outcomes. The stringent collection process ensures integrity, reducing uncertainties related to sample adulteration found in alternative testing methods.

By using hair samples that are difficult to alter, hair tests provide a clear and dependable result. This method eliminates doubt about the validity of the drug test, promoting confidence and assurance in the process, vital for maintaining robust and indisputable testing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
