Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Blue Earth, Minnesota. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct these tests. Hair length should range between 1.5 to 2 inches, taken from the head or body in most scenarios. These tests can scrutinize for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Opted by employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse management, hair tests substitute the traditional urine tests. For those implementing zero-tolerance drug policies, hair testing is favorable for a notable detection window, extending for up to 90 days, gathered in a closely monitored collection, and it’s challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent usage within 5-day spans.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a significant method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding markers in the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to approximately 3 months for substances. The collection process is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and facilitates convenient shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 strands of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, the preferred sample size for analysis. For EtG tests, extra services, and/or assessments including more than 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a laboratory drug test result are comprised of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing stage where a sample is incorporated into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening denotes a preliminary swift examination for misuse of drugs. Despite Screening serving as a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen mandates confirmation for it to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples showing preliminary positive results in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen, setting the stage for Extraction. At this phase, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is considerably lower than found in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug screening is acknowledged as the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can detect drug use up to 90 days prior, in contrast to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Supplies past usage information: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over a period, not merely reflecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
