Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Becker, Minnesota. Whether in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in hair analysis and have testing facilities nationwide, including every city, allowing us to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is required, or body hair may suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair tests to urine tests. They cater to zero-tolerance policies, legal requirements, and probation conditions. The main advantage of a hair test is its extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with collection under direct observation, making tampering extremely difficult. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Hair serves as a historical record for substances, capturing biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage over a period of approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or when testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If head hair cannot be collected, a comparable quantity of body hair should be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Procedure

The laboratory drug test process consists of four critical phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into the lab's database. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for drug presence. While it is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result needs confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive in the screening process, additional hair is selected from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing result precision.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over prolonged periods rather than just recent consumption.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It may take approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
