In Barrett, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialization in hair testing allows us to serve clients nationwide with testing centers in every city capable of executing a hair test. Generally, hair weighing 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing selections.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists favor hair tests over common urine tests. Organizations with no-drug use policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals often select hair follicle tests. These tests offer a significant advantage—detecting drug use over a much longer period, up to 90 days. The observed collection method makes cheating nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair tests are now viewed as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and other substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. Collected from near the scalp, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to roughly three months. Hair is easy to gather, hard to modify, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically discussing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main laboratory processes for handling a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s network. This comprises verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid review for drug substances. While it is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening demand a further verification.

For samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmations of any positive results from Screening are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a cleansing prior to confirmation, if applicable. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria along with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can discover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's notably challenging to circumvent a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage insight: It can display a timeframe of drug usage patterns, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become perceptible in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle below the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
