In Alexandria, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we provide services in all cities across the nation. For a hair test, we require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, preferably from the crown, although body hair can also be used. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

The hair follicle drug test has become a more prevalent method for drug testing recently. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often mandate a hair test over traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies and is used for probation cases. The test's key advantage is its longer detection period, up to 90 days, and the observed collection process ensures a reliable result. Nonetheless, for recent drug use detection, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair testing has emerged as a significant tool in detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber, hair records an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window stretching up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory system. This includes validating that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at a far lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
