Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Williamsburg, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct a hair test. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing needs.

In recent years, the approach to drug testing increasingly incorporates a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal institutions, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of these tests involves an extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected via supervised collection methods, making it extremely challenging to manipulate. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. When sourced close to the head, hair offers a detection period for up to about three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily comprises four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need confirmation through further testing.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly finer concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can track drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Reflects historical consumption: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Williamsburg, MI, offers substantial benefits over traditional urine tests. With a longer detection window, hair tests analyze a comprehensive drug history of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited. Extended Detection Window

In Williamsburg, MI, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is invaluable for employers seeking comprehensive substance history. This method enhances visibility of an individual's drug use over the last 90 days, providing a broad view of substance habits. Employers benefit from thorough background checks, leading to more informed hiring and retention decisions through this extended analysis period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
