Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments throughout Tawas City, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing facilities nationwide for administering such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are required. Hair examinations can reveal the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for other personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly included hair follicle drug screening. Both employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair analysis over the traditional urine method. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probationary programs. The main advantage of using hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection window, up to 90 days, carried out under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for identifying drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for a period of up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a standard pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample quantity for evaluations and confirmations. For EtG tests, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample with a precision jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of the sample into the lab’s system. This stage ensures the sample was secured and transported properly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody platform.

The Screening phase entails an initial rapid test for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples initially testing positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from the hair at concentrations lower than those in other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initial positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage trends: It supplies a record of drug habits over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent use detection: Drugs need around 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Price: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
