Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rogers City, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing with locations across cities nationwide capable of conducting the tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This type of testing is ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The significant advantage is the extended detection window, typically covering up to 90 days, and the almost impossible task of tampering with the test. However, for drug use detection within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the top choice.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent approach for identifying substance usage, hair testing allows for an extended review of alcohol and drugs. Hair secures long-term evidence, capturing biomarkers within the strand’s fibers as they grow. With a sample near the scalp, there is potential for up to a 90-day detection span regarding alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

The optimal sample, a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately pencil thickness), yields 100mg, suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Weighing is best conducted on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, comparable body hair is an option. “Head hair” refers solely to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for processing drug test outcomes includes four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This phase ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although screening is cost-efficient to exclude drug use on most samples, confirmation is essential for positive results to be valid in court. Samples that are likely positive in Screening require a further confirmation.

If Screening declares a sample likely positive, additional hair from the initial sample is set for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method.

Positive screening confirmations are done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing is performed before confirming all presumptive positive samples. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating on a hair test is highly unlikely, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Trace historical intake: Provides a drug use timeline, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and growth rates can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
