Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Paw Paw, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, turn to Accredited Drug Testing. With a network of testing centers across the nation, including in every major city, we are ready to conduct your hair test. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in drug screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent anti-drug policies, as well as courts and those on probation, rely on hair follicle tests. A major advantage is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that's hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair has established itself as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the strands of new growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month detection horizon for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg, an optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG additions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, the equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair is intended to signify scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential operations in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a specimen within the laboratory system. This step involves verifying that the specimen is sealed and properly sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves conducting an initial rapid analysis for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical approach to excluding drug use in most samples; however, a positive screening result requires verification for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If a specimen is found presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, the extraction process isolates drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug examinations.

Verification of any positive screen status is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before verification, if necessary. The entire lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Retains usage history: Offers a timeline of drug consumption spanning a lengthy duration, unlike recent-only detection.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of assessing recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result fluctuation: Hair color and individual growth differences can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle housed beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
