In Munising, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing ensures precise hair follicle drug evaluations. Whether you require assessments for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis. Available nationwide, these centers necessitate 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the head or body. These tests offer customized options for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, among others.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have gained popularity over traditional methods. Employers, legal entities, and substance professionals are opting for hair tests rather than standard urine checks. These tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probationary conditions with an extended detection window of 90 days. While nearly impossible to tamper with, urine analysis remains precise for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drug consumption by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing about 200 hair strands (approximate size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be acquired. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This stage ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial fast check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective strategy to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive during Screening need a confirmatory test.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than seen in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that test presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a historical pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting new use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although typically called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Munising, MI, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in multiple ways. Hair tests combine accuracy and reliability, providing a more comprehensive understanding of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter period, hair tests reflect substance use over months, giving a broader insight into individual drug use patterns.

Employers and authorities benefit significantly from hair follicle tests. These tests' superior detection accuracy highlights their capability to uncover repeated usage that urine tests might miss, making them essential in settings demanding in-depth drug use evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Munising, MI is its extended detection window. This method assesses drug usage patterns over a longer window, up to 90 days. It provides employers with a comprehensive overview of an individual's drug history, surpassing the limited scope of traditional testing methods.

Employers benefit from this broadened perspective, which aids in making informed decisions about hiring or maintaining staff. With this long-term view, employers can better understand and maintain a drug-free workplace, ensuring safety and compliance with industry standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Munising, MI offers a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing. Unlike other methods, hair tests make it incredibly difficult for individuals to alter the sample, leading to more reliable and consistent results. This intrinsic resistance to tampering delivers confidence to employers and legal entities relying on accurate substance use data.

By reducing the risk of adulteration, hair tests ensure that results are both dependable and valid. This reliability is crucial for organizations which heavily weigh drug test outcomes in employee assessments and compliance monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
