Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance analysis in Hastings, Michigan. For those in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in this field is unmatched, with centers ready nationwide to conduct the procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are sampled. Hair examinations can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific analyses.

Lately, hair follicle assessments have become the preferred method for drug detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now demand hair evaluations instead of typical urine tests. Employers with strict non-drug policies, judicial entities, and those on probation are key users. The main advantage of hair analysis is its extended detection period, covering up to 90 days. It's conducted under direct supervision, making deceit nearly impossible, yet for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine analysis remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of long-term drug and alcohol usage by embedding biological markers in the strands of the hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to roughly a 3-month timespan. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (analogous to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for determining the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specify only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms, such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The core phases involved in processing drug tests in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the first-stage processing where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. It ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra information entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of abused drugs. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive finding needs validation to be court-admissible. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), hence hair drug testing is the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening-positive result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples that are presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to alter, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals drug usage patterns: It provides insights into drug consumption trends over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Hastings, MI provides advantages over traditional urine tests through its superior detection capabilities. Hair analyses not only offer prolonged detection but are also more challenging to evade or manipulate, ensuring higher reliability and accuracy in results as compared to urine testing.

With a more extensive detection window, hair samples can capture drug use history that urine tests might not, providing a more detailed view of an individual’s exposure to substances and ensuring more informed decision-making in employment and legal contexts.

Extended Detection Window

In Hastings, MI, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing reveals drug use over a substantial period, up to 90 days, unlike many other tests. This greatly benefits employers by presenting a thorough overview of a person's history with substances, providing insights into both occasional and habitual use.

The prolonged period for which hair tests can identify drug remnants offers a more comprehensive understanding of a candidate or employee's recent and past substance use, facilitating better hiring and management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing significantly mitigates the risk of adulteration in Hastings, MI, providing solid, unquestionable outcomes. This method is more secure against tampering than traditional tests, as the collection process is monitored, and the sample type is inherently more resistant to disturbance.

The robust nature of hair sample testing reassures both employers and agencies about the credibility of the results, knowing that the risk of obfuscation by the tested individual is extraordinarily low.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
