Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grandville, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide that can conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts can be used. Hair testing may check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized solutions.

In recent times, utilizing a hair follicle drug test has become increasingly common for drug assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A key advantage includes an extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, making it almost impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain most accurate for substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can yield up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. This method of collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (roughly matching the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both preliminary and confirmatory screenings. For EtG, added tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The comprehensive steps involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use across numerous samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a wash prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Low risk of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
