Accredited Drug Testing conducts comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Dowagiac, Michigan. For those in need of drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis offers you reliable results, supported by nationwide testing centers that stand ready for hair sampling. The requirement typically involves 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the crown or body. Hair samples can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate personalized testing needs.

Recent trends indicate a growing preference for hair follicle drug testing in the process of drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. This method supports zero-tolerance policies, provides consistent results for probationary assessments, and grants a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days. Hair tests feature observed collections, adding resilience against tampering. Nevertheless, for screenings within a 5-day period, urine testing remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair reveals an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advised. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent mass of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into the laboratory's system. This step involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening will require further confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out with reference to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
