At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Clawson, Michigan. If you're looking for hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis. We have testing centers across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer a hair test to standard urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are used by employers with strict no-drug policies and for individuals on probation. They offer a longer detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, are collected through observed procedures, and are quite tamper-resistant. Yet, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When samples are gathered near the scalp, they can detect drugs and alcohol for up to around three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially integrated into a laboratory's system. It comprises confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is removed from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It furnishes a record of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Clawson, MI, hair testing emerges superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Urine tests might identify immediate substance use, but hair tests provide a wider detection scope. Hair tests are less intrusive, mitigate privacy concerns, and offer a nearly insurmountable challenge for those attempting to alter results for their benefit.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Clawson, MI, offers an extended detection window, encompassing up to 90 days of potential substance use. This extended period gives employers a thorough view of an individual’s substance history, contributing to more informed hiring or retention decisions. It surpasses the timeframe of urine tests, allowing a deeper insight into past consumption behavior, essential for maintaining high workplace standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Clawson, MI, stand out for their tamper-resistant methodology. They drastically lower the chances of sample adulteration, delivering results that are both reliable and difficult to contest. Compared to urine tests, hair testing’s rigorous nature ensures that sample integrity remains intact. This makes hair testing a trusted choice for ensuring unaltered results that uphold testing credibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
