Comprehensive Hair Follicle Drug Testing in St. James, Maryland - Accredited Drug Testing is a trusted name for hair drug or alcohol testing nationwide, with locations including St. James, Maryland. Specializing in hair testing, our centers offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the scalp or body.

The Rise of Hair Follicle Drug Testing - Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are being adopted by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to urine tests. With a detection window of up to 90 days, these tests offer a longer trace period, are conducted under observation, and greatly minimize the potential for cheating, although urine tests remain more accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can reveal an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around three months for various substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a standard pencil), nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg quantity is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with processing a sample into the laboratory's system, which encompasses checking the sample's seal and delivery, assigning a random laboratory accessioning number (LAN), and completing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates validation for legal acceptance. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening demand a further confirmation.

In cases where Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at remarkably low concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring why hair drug testing is considered challenging.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is executed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted against both the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Hair tests offer a level of accuracy that makes them hard to deceive.
  • Historical tracking: They can map a user’s drug consumption pattern over time, beyond recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5 to 7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle within the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
