Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Owings Mills, Maryland. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair examinations, with facilities in cities across the nation capable of executing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assays are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs. The key advantage lies in a longer detection span of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for screening drug use within the past five days, urine assessments remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is easy, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. In reference to head hair, we specify only hair from the scalp. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The core stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift inspection for drugs of abuse. Although Screening presents a budget-friendly means to negate drug consumption on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to gain acceptance in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Affirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Owings Mills, MD, hair follicle testing stands superior to urine tests due to enhanced detection periods. Hair tests uncover drug use up to 90 days prior – a stark contrast to the limited timeframe of urine testing.

The accuracy and reliability of hair drug tests greatly surpass that of traditional urine assays. This comprehensive detection capability makes hair tests valuable in maintaining drug-free workplaces.

Employers in Owings Mills favor hair tests for their ability to offer indisputable results, reducing the opportunity for manipulation seen in alternative testing methods, thereby ensuring stricter enforcement of drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Owings Mills, MD, excels in detecting drug use over extended periods, offering a testing window of up to 90 days. This comprehensive approach provides employers with a clear and extensive view of substance use patterns.

Employers benefit from extended detection capabilities, as hair tests can identify chronic drug use, unlike shorter tests. This long-term insight aids in thorough evaluation of candidates and employees.

By revealing a historical pattern of substance use, hair tests enable early intervention, ensuring a safer working environment. The broad detection window assists employers in making informed staffing decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Owings Mills, MD, hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant solution, significantly curbing chances of sample adulteration. This integrity ensures reliable results, unlike urine tests which are prone to manipulation.

The robustness of hair tests deters attempts at cheating, providing stakeholders with unquestionable outcomes, thereby boosting employer confidence and trust in the testing process.

Employers seeking accuracy and consistency in drug testing will find hair follicle assessments invaluable due to their resistant nature to falsification, leading to more confident hiring and retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
