Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ocean City, Maryland. If you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we are experts in hair testing and offer testing centers in every city throughout the nation where hair testing can be performed. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or another body part. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are often seeking hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A major advantage of this test is its ability to detect drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, performed under supervision, making it nearly immune to cheating. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Utilizing hair as a method for detecting drugs and alcohol has gained a reputation for its effectiveness. Hair captures long-term data about substances by embedding markers within the hair strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeline of around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands, approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for examination and verification. For EtG tests, additional testing requirements, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a lab’s system, which includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid evaluation to detect drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient strategy to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive indication requires confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at more minimal concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is considered the most complex to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower window.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Displays a pattern of drug use over an extended timeframe, capturing more than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing supersede urine tests in Ocean City, MD? The benefits are notable, primarily in superior detection accuracy. Hair tests detect a broader range of substances over a longer period than urine tests. Hair sampling is less invasive and more challenging to tamper with, providing reliability.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair testing demonstrates enhanced precision. Drug metabolites are trapped in the hair shaft, offering clear histories of substance use. This detailed insight outperforms urine tests, making it an essential tool for employers and courts enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Ocean City, MD, excels with its extended detection window. This testing method can identify drug use up to 90 days in the past, far surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests. Such extensive detection is indispensable for employers seeking detailed substance use history.

This comprehensive view offers employers a clear picture of a candidate or employee's habits, aiding informed hiring and retention decisions. The longer detection window allows for better-informed decisions related to workplace safety and policy compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the hallmarks of hair follicle tests in Ocean City, MD, is their tamper-resistant nature. These tests significantly mitigate the chance of manipulation, providing unquestionable results. Hair samples are collected under observation, reducing risks of adulteration often seen in other methods.

The reliability of hair testing stems from the physiological manner in which substances are incorporated into hair, rendering tampering ineffective. As a result, these tests offer a level of certainty that few other testing methods can match, enhancing their credibility and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
