Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Laurel, Maryland. Whether you are seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers located across all major cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. Hair tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to meet specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for screening substances. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored due to its longer detection period of up to 90 days, reliable observation during collection, and resistance to tampering. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to 90 days for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or panels above 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning serves as the initial introduction of a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any data entry omissions from electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. Though it’s a cost-effective way to discard drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation for courtroom acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of a positive screen is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Difficult to evade: The test's resistance to cheating enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers an overview of drug use trends over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent activity: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually costs more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," they assess the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
