Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Glen Burnie, Maryland. If a hair-based drug or alcohol screening is required, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG or unique testing requests.

Hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity for substance screenings in recent years. Many businesses, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer a hair test over urine samples. Hair follicle tests serve employers with strict no-drug-use rules, the legal system, and those under probationary observation. The key advantage of this test lies in its extended detection window for drug use, often up to 90 days, gathered through a supervised process and hard to falsify. Yet, for substances taken in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome consists of the four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples appearing presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical data: Provides a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Glen Burnie, MD, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests due to its enhanced precision in identifying drug use. Where urine tests fall short, hair follicle testing delivers reliable results.

Benefits of Hair Testing:

  • Longer detection windows
  • Harder to alter results
  • More reliable than traditional methods
With the ability to detect drug use over an extended period, hair follicle tests are superior to urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Glen Burnie, MD, one major advantage of hair follicle testing is its prolonged detection window. Capable of identifying drug usage up to 90 days after occurrence, it offers an extensive review of an individual's substance history.

Employers benefit from this detailed visibility into past substance use, enabling an informed decision-making process. This extended timeline surpasses the limited detection offered by traditional methods like urine testing.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Offering a tamper-resistant method, hair follicle tests in Glen Burnie, MD drastically reduce the chance of sample adulteration. This durable approach yields definitive and credible results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
