Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Easton, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing and operate testing centers throughout cities nationwide to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body will be sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Lately, drug testing procedures have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are selected by employers with zero-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Their key advantage is a much longer detection window for drug use, often up to 90 days, administered with observed collection, making tampering near impossible. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a longer-term record of alcohol and drug use. Sampling hair near the scalp can reveal substance use within a roughly 3-month time frame. Hair is straightforward to gather, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (analogous to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's entry into the lab system, involving the verification of sealing and shipping, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of needed data entry outside the electronic custody chain system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use cases in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with positive screening results necessitate further confirmation.

Upon identifying a screening stage presumptive positive, additional hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase entails extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underpinning hair drug test complexity.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter durations.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair tests resist manipulation, yielding more precise results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It discloses drug use trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The test often called "hair follicle tests" actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Reigns Supreme in Easton, MD, when juxtaposed with traditional urine analysis, hair testing showcases superior detection capabilities. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
