Accredited Drug Testing provides robust hair follicle drug evaluations in Cumberland, Maryland. If arranging a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing offers expertise in hair examinations and boasts a network of testing centers across all nationwide cities for conducting hair tests. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or alternative body hair can be used. Hair samples support analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing frequently involves hair follicle examinations. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair drug evaluations over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle testing appeals to employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. A primary advantage is a considerably extended detection window, up to 90 days, via direct observation, making it nearly unbeatable. Yet, for recent 5-day detection, urine tests maintain peak accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate long-term histories of alcohol and other substances by locking in biomarkers as the hair grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, it is relatively resistant to tampering, and it ships easily.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen's weight with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory examination of a drug test result unfolds in four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the commencement of processing a sample within a lab's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and executing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although it is an economical means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive result from Screening mandates further confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples marked as presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen to prep for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any affirmative screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days recurrently, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is considerably challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Shows historical usage: Offers insights into a pattern of drug usage over a timeline, beyond mere recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot notice recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variability can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests," the evaluation assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
