In College Park, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it’s hair drug or alcohol tests you require, we are specialists in hair testing with centers across the Nation. For most cases, individuals need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation often employ hair follicle drug tests. One major advantage is a much extended detection window of up to 90 days, closely monitored to prevent tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug usage, the urine test still holds the most precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Biomarkers are captured in the fibers of actively growing hair, providing a prolonged record of substance use. When cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

An optimal sample involves a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-thick) nearest to the scalp, supplying 100mg of hair for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh this sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in lab processing for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is incorporated into the lab’s system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a quick initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-efficient way to clear most samples, a positive result needs legal admissibility, requiring further confirmation. Samples that test positive at this stage need additional verification.

If a sample tests positive initially, more hair is taken from the first sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug assays the toughest method to conduct.

Any positive screening is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests cover drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests resist cheating, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows past usage: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs appear in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair shaft, not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In College Park, MD, hair follicle testing is preferred over urine tests due to superior detection accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests are limited in their detection window, hair tests illuminate a longer substance use history, providing comprehensive insights. The enhanced accuracy minimizes false negatives, significantly improving the reliability of the results.
Employers benefit from hair testing's ability to detect a wider range of substances over an extended period.

Extended Detection Window

One of the strong advantages of hair follicle testing in College Park, MD, is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. While traditional tests fall short in time scope, hair testing allows employers a meticulous view of an individual’s drug use history. This broad time frame facilitates informed hiring and monitoring decisions.
The ability to detect past drug use accurately provides employers a critical tool for maintaining a safe workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In College Park, MD, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing greatly diminishes the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are collected in an observable manner, ensuring authenticity and reliability. This integrity assures accurate results, reducing discrepancies significantly compared to methods vulnerable to tampering.
Employers and organizations depend on these results for their unquestionable validity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
