In Baltimore, Maryland, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require drug or alcohol testing, our experts are here to help. We provide testing in cities Nationwide, needing at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair samples are tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

The hair follicle drug test has become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts favor it over urine tests. Its advantages include a 90-day detection window and resistance to tampering, ensuring accuracy. For drug use detected within five days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline due to its ability to capture biomarkers within the hair’s fibers during growth. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month detection period for substances. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch hair segment, approximately 200 strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair isn’t an option, equivalent body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory testing process for drug detection involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step, incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This process checks that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial, efficient check for drug presence. It's an economical solution for excluding drug use in most samples; however, any positive result needs validation for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further analysis. In the Extraction phase, substances are removed from the hair at concentrations much lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of positive screens is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the scrutiny of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Deceiving a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers chronological data: It can illustrate a pattern of substance use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become traceable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Advantages of Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Testing in Baltimore, MD Hair follicle testing demonstrates superior advantages over urine tests, especially in accuracy and detection reliability. Sentinels of drug-free environments, such as workplaces and legal systems, increasingly turn to hair testing for its exceptional long-term detection capabilities.

In a contrasting view, urine tests often face challenges like shorter detection windows, compromising their effectiveness. Hair testing, however, showcases the breadth of its detection scope, spanning up to 90 days, making it an unparalleled solution for comprehensive substance screening.

Extended Detection Window

Extensive Detection Span in Baltimore, MD The appeal of hair follicle testing lies largely in its ability to track substance use over an extended period, notably up to 90 days. This expansive window allows testers to view a more complete picture of an individual's substance use history, unlike other testing methods.

In Baltimore, many organizations and individuals choose hair testing precisely for this reason. Employers value the extended detection period, which aids them in upholding stringent substance use policies, while also gaining deeper insights into the behaviors of employees or potential hires.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Resilient Against Adulteration in Baltimore, MD A significant advantage of choosing hair follicle tests is their inherent resistance to tampering. Sample adulteration, an issue that’s plagued other testing forms, finds little ground here. Each test conducted maintains its integrity, greatly enhancing the trustworthiness of its findings.

By reducing sample tampering risks, hair testing delivers results that are both credible and hard to dispute. This robustness in testing makes it a preferred option for those in Baltimore seeking reliable drug screening outcomes without the worry of compromised samples.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
